Our First Topic: Spring is Coming & So Are Those Bugs!

As the snow melts away, and the temperatures rise, lots of bugs will be alive and active. Warmer temperatures signal to the bugs such as ants, wasps, and spiders that its time to come out. With the blossoming of flowers and trees, many bugs will be collecting food, finding mates, and building their homes.

What will attract bugs to your home or business?

Good question! There are many factors that could attract unwanted pests such as ants, stinging insects, box elder bugs, beetles, tics, and spiders. Let's dive into the most common ones.

Food & Water: All bugs will be on the hunt for food resources and a good water source to go to. For example, ants will be in their prime time colonizing activity. Collecting food and water for their queen and her babies. Tics and fleas are seeking new hosts in the spring, hiding in cracks and corners of buildings near where dogs are housed. Spiders will be laying their eggs.

Recommendations:

  • Don't over water your lawn and get rid of any standing water sources. Turn over any bowls, old tires, anything that is holding water. For bird baths and pet water, please change these regularly. Standing water sources can become breeding sites for mosquitoes and other bugs or an easy access to water.

  • Have proper food storage and don't leave out any food for bugs or mice to munch on. Store food and pet food in thick plastic or metal containers to keep insects and mice from munching on food.

  • Ask your vet about safe products to get rid of fleas and tics on your pets.

  • Spring cleaning is a wonderful way to reduce pest populations. Spiders love dark, wet, and cluttered environments where they will be undisturbed and can set up their homes.

Trees, shrubs, and bushes growing near and touching your homes: A lot of bugs use trees and shrubs to crawl up onto your house. Consider them to be bridges or highways into your home. Pests such as ants, aphids, earwigs and box elder bugs are among many who utilize these "bridges". Mice are also great climbers, they will utilize branches and trees to get access into your home.

Recommendation:

  • Keep bushes, branches, and tree limbs cut down to prevent them from touching your home.

  • Keep shrubs and bushes pruned up as much as possible throughout the year.

Flowering Plants: Flowering plants are great for our environment, especially for pollinators. Stinging insects such as wasps and yellow jackets will set up shop if they know you have a lot of blossoming flowers. Plus these stinging insects love to eat aphids and other little bugs on flowers.

Recommendation: We aren't suggesting you get rid of any of your flowers, at all. Our suggestion is to try not to place potted plants or plant new flowers near your home in attempt to reduce nests being built around the eaves and soffits of the house.
